Two Day Pass

the weekend was all about staying warm and dry. ample time was spent relaxing after the long week and also reconnecting with loved ones and ourselves.

jess
joined us on friday. she and i enjoyed a glass of malbec while we waited for the pizza we would bring home for dinner that would quickly disappear. the restaurant was busy. the gloaming getting later and later. it doesn't yet feel like spring, but it's beginning to resemble renewal. dessert was a game of apples to apples with the whole family. late night the big girls played mkf. it was telling.

hubby was like the energizer bunny on saturday. the alarm on his phone was sounding all day with reminders of to dos. i was not so productive. yet i baked a dessert to take to dinner, finally took down miss bit's valentine's tree (!) and decided there will be no easter tree, packed up the snowmen and all things winter, and purged files, shredded paper. t bone was back and forth and forth and back all day with his friends. miss bit had a friend to play for the afternoon before a classmate's late afternoon birthday party at a firehouse.

we spent the evening at my brother and sil's. dinner was pot pie ala ina and deliciously fitting for the chilly, damp night. we all licked our ramekins clean and our wounds too when the cats didn't win. none more than t. bone who was convinced he was winning pools at both mine and hubby's workplaces until the upsetting upset.

we were woken early sunday not by our alarms, but by silence. there were multiple short, startling power outages in our area. we made it to church early. while t. bone and miss bit were in sunday school, hubby and i enjoyed the same breakfast as last week and obeyed strict orders to bring the littles moon- sized candy cookies from the cafe again. just as we made it home, it started to hail. no walks. no bike rides. no more spring cleaning. t. bone went to play hoops with a friend and bit took turns playing games with me and then with her dad. i endured a much needed run. while the boys went to baseball practice, the girls showered and pampered. we all met back around the kitchen table for dinner. the kids were in love with the homemade mac & cheese. it's the same recipe i always make except i used all whole grain pasta and splurged on good aged cheddar. i think that's a worthwhile trade off. we had corn so perfectly sweet i had to clean both the kids cobs lest any go to waste. the cooking light meat loaf even passed as edible.

before we knew it, it was bedtime. what a show the night sky delivered. lightning danced as the kids drifted off to dreamland. that's where i am off to now. good night.
